Bringing green innovation to protect our marine environments: using hydrocarbon sludges to recover oil spills
IRIS forms part of an Ibero-Italian partnership that aims to use various biotechnological processes to valorise hydrocarbon based sludges in order to produce additives for marine remediation.
This development will close the cycle on highly contaminating sludges by using them as the basis for the production of a novel product capable of gelling oil spillage to facilitate and maximise oil spill recovery. In addition to the novel gelling product, biomass will be also be obtained for energetic purposes.
This development, which will commence in January 2012, will be carried out under the frawework of the MARE project, a 24 month initiative that is receiving part funding from the European MANUNET programme.
