Wood is a natural resource and sustaining its use in the furniture, construction and other sectors is of paramount importance to securing the future of the forest cluster in Europe.

There is major opportunity for research and development to inject innovation into the wood industry to enable wood products and materials to compete effectively with the growing use of plastics, aluminium and other materials.  

The engineers and materials scientists at IRIS are working closely with wood processors to improve the performance, quality and safety of their materials by combining novel processing treatments, such as plasma, with the latest innovations in the field of materials science.

In addition, our environmental team is working on end-of-life scenarios in order to increase the reuse of wood residues as feedstock for biomass, as well as raw materials for other applications.
